Northwest Afternoon Goes the Way of Dana Middleton

    By adam.cozens | June 11, 2008

    Dateline Seattle-

After deciding that my birth was cause enough to give Seattle’s its own locally-televised daily afternoon drivel-driven talk show, KOMO-TV’s “Northwest Afternoon” is getting plucked from the line-up 24 years after it began. Whatever will the resume-less Cindi Rinehart do?

Started in 1984 as what scientists will ultimately view as one of the world’s longest-running social experiments, chronically the effects of minuet levels of celebrity upon mid-market candle-makers, “NWA” has been getting shellacked as of late by better, nationally-syndicated programming like Dr. Phil and Rachael Ray and KOMO has decided to cut its losses. Well, what can you do?

Jimm Brown, the eloquently captivating and vivacious spokesman for the Fisher-Broadcasting run station, announced that many of the existing show personalities will be absorbed into other facets of Fisher Broadcasting including KOMO Radio and Star 101. 5. By this time next year, with all of those opportunities having failed, they will have no choice but to April Zepeda them right out onto Dexter Ave S.

Despite my personal belief that “Northwest Afternoon” does, and has for some time now sucked (how DARE you bait-and-switch us with an announced Barry Manilow appearance in the mid-90’s! I was pulled out of school early to see that man and you claimed he was having “plane issues”? Psssh! MALARKEY I SAY!), it does dishearten me to see another locally-produced program meet it’s Neilsen-decided fate. Growing up as a fan of Almost Live! (a now-extinct Seattle-based sketch comedy show), I one day aspired to join the ranks of the fun-loving KING-TV cast, only to have it canceled before my dream for the local spotlight could ever be realized. I’m sure somewhere in Auburn right now, there is a little girl weeping over the fact that she too, will now never be able to locally broadcast informative exposes and weekend recaps on the exciting developments in the tumultuous world of soap-operas like her television heroes who came before her.

    A (semi) sad day indeed.

By the way, for those at home, the over/under on how many months need to go by before Natasha Curry begins appearing in the background of Shane Company ads is set at 5.
